Product Safety

The Shared Regulatory Service is responsible for enforcing a wide range of safety legislation relating to consumer goods.

Under product safety legislation we have the responsibility for inspecting goods for safety at manufacturing, importing and retail stage. Accurate labelling of goods is needed to ensure that products are used correctly and by appropriate age groups.

Electrical-plugGenerally, the most complained about goods include:

  • Electrical products (such as mobile phone chargers)
  • Sunbeds
  • Toys
  • Cosmetics
  • Furniture
  • Second hand cars

Products are inspected at manufacturing and retail premises across Bridgend, Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan and a programme of sampling takes place each year on a wide variety of products.

The products sampled are purchased locally and sent to specialist test houses to be tested for compliance with the appropriate legislation or safety standard.

We will investigate complaints by members of the public who believe they may have purchased unsafe goods.
