Brucella canis testing of puppies required by UK Government

With the increasing number of dogs and puppies that have been importedPuppies 2 over the years from Romania, UK Government have implemented testing of all puppies and dogs for Brucella canis (B. canis) prior to import from 7th October 2025.

7th October 2025

B. canis is a bacterial infection that affects dogs and can spread to humans, although the risk is low.  In dogs, B. canis can cause infertility and miscarriages. Other symptoms can include tiredness, swelling of lymph nodes and back problems.  There is no treatment available for B. Canis in dogs.

It can spread from dogs to humans where there is direct contact with reproductive fluids and birthing products from an infected dog.  Symptoms in humans may not be immediately prevalent, but can cause fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, sweating, headaches, fatigue and back and joint pain.  Infection is treated with antibiotics.

If untreated, it can cause complications such as inflammation of the lining of the heart, or inflammation of the protective membrane around the brain and spinal cord (meningitis).  It may also have an adverse effect on pregnant women.  Fatality is rare.
