Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Update
On 24 June, the Chief Veterinary Officer for Wales has unfortunately confirmed two cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).
June 27th, 2025
These are the first cases in Wales since April 2023. The first confirmed case is a backyard flock near Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire
and the second a gamebird enterprise near Glyn Ceiriog, Wrexham.
A 3km Protection Zone (PZ) and 10km Surveillance Zone (SZ) will be put in place around both premises. The SZ in the Wrexham case will cross the border into Shropshire, England.
Declarations have been published here: Avian influenza (bird flu): current restrictions | GOV.WALES. These new cases highlight the importance of all bird keepers maintaining the highest standards of biosecurity at all times, to protect their flocks.
As a reminder, the all-Wales Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) with mandatory biosecurity measures remains in place, as well as a poultry gatherings ban.
Further information on biosecurity measures can be found here.
